• Waves: No significant wave disturbance has been observed near the shore.
• Beaching Ground: Firm and sandy, Suitable for beaching of Scrap vessels.

• Vessel Size:  Up to 12 M Draft and DWA can anchorage
• Position: 5.1’ X 250 (T) from Ghogha Light House.
• The holding ground, stiff mud and sand is good, while at anchor at DWA due care must be exercised especially during spring tide.

• Asia’s largest well established ship recycling yard.
• S.T. Mont the largest ship ever recycled with 83,598 LDT in December 2009.
• Serves the Nation by producing about 4.5 million tons per annum of re-rollable steel without exploiting natural resources.
• Ship recycling in India has emerged as an activity of sizable volume supplying raw material to the steel-industry for both re-rolling and re-melting. The recycling process also supplies second hand material and equipment for re-use both locally as well as for export. At end of the operational life, the ship still represents a resource, as a considerable proportion of her lightweight tonnage is suited for reuse or recycling.
• Ship Recycling Process itself is an Eco and environmental friendly industrial activity, which is not only generating re-rollable steel but also facilitate society by direct and in direct employment.

• To bring awareness among the labourers working in the yard, GMB has developed a Safety Training and Labour Welfare Institute at Alang, from 2003, where every person related to any type of work in Alang Yard is given Safety Training by the qualified safety officers of GMB and only after that becomes eligible for employment in the Yard.
• Every person needs to have "Basic Safety for All” training of 6 days to work in Alang. A specialized Safety training course on "Gas Cutter Safety Training” of 2 days for persons engaged in cutting operations is also conducted. These training are free of cost from GMB and all trainees are provided with free breakfast and evening snacks during the training and certificates at the end of the Training. More than 1.2 lac workers are given Safety Training from till date.
• Safety indicated banners and posters are affixed in the plots as well as at various places along the roads of the yard.

• Local Hospital run by Indian Red Cross Society - financially assisted by GMB
• Dedicated 108 Ambulance operational from January-2013.
• One Mobil Hospital with Doctor is operated by Ship recycling Association .
• Full fledge hospital with 30 bed was constructed by GMB and to be made operational shortly by ESIC.
• About 15000 labours registered with ESIC and smart card to each labour to be issued by ESIC.

• Road facility - A service road having rigid pavement in a stretch of 10Km has been developed to facilitate the ship breaking plots.
• Housing Project - A Labour colony under phase-I has been constructed for 1008 labours working in the yard. Facilities like - Canteen, Office, shops and internal roads are also provided along with accommodation including basic requirement like- water supply, sanitation, electrification etc.
• Sanitation facility - Total - 07 number of sanitation units at different places have been constructed for Labourers working in the ship break yard.
• Water supply facility - A HGL Sump of 25 Lakh litres capacity has been constructed at Trapaj Head-works to draw water from Mahi-Pariej line to Alang & Sosiya yard through Express pipe-line. Separate storage and internal distribution system have been developed for water supply network for ship breaking plots in both yards.
  • Alang: Overhead tank – 12.00 Lakh litres and Underground sump – 10 Lakh litres.
  • Sosiya: Overhead tank – 7.00 Lakh litres and Underground sump – 6 Lakh litres.
• Public water stand post - Stand-posts for potable water to labours working in the Alang & Sosiya yard have been provided.
• Fire station - A Fire-station building has been provided in the Alang ship breaking yard.
• Safety Training Institute - A building for Safety Training Institute to educate the labours for ship breaking skills and Labour welfare activities has been constructed.
• Electrification - Necessary road lights illumination along with other required facilities have been provided.

Yard visit facility is permitted for visitors from India as well as foreign country. As per prevailing Rules and in view of the security, safety and environment aspects, to grant permission for any Videography / Photography at Ship Recycling Yard are strictly prohibited.
