GMB

Porbandar is an all-weather port, with direct berthing facilities up to 50,000 DWT ships. It is situated on the West Coast of Saurashtra facing the Arabian Sea.

Road and Rail Network

Porbandar is connected to the rest of the country by broad gauge railway line. The port is about 5 km from the nearest BG rail head. The port is well connected with SH. The nearest National Highway 8E is about 6 km from the port.

Anchorage

Anchorage is about 2 km offshore, south-West of break water, with good holding ground and a depth of 9.5 meters. Approach to the anchorage of break water is 1.1 Nautical miles. Two steamers can operate at a time. Anchorage operations remain closed during monsoon period due to heavy swell and winds.

It is advised that vessel to remain 5 N.M. SW of break water, after berthing programmed fixed vessel to approach as per agent/port authority advise.

Pilotage

Pilotage is compulsory. A vessel awaiting pilot should anchor south-west of the breakwater end, about 1 nautical mile away, where ample water and good holding ground is available. Only daylight navigation is available.

Front and rear transit marks for berthing at deep water berths.

Harbour Structures

  • Wharf for steamers : length 385m (235m GMB wharf and 150m private jetty of M/s. Saurashtra Cement Ltd.) with permissible draught up to 9.8 m.
  • Landing and berthing : Total 2,128 meters in length for lighters. Fishing activities are being performed from these berths.
  • Finger jetty along the breakwater is 101m in length and 60m in width for lighterage operations
  • Fishery Harbour Terminal is having five jetties for fishing

Commodities Handled

Import : Coal, LPG and Wet dates
Export : Salt, Cement/Clinker, Clay Bauxite, Onion, Raw cotton, Soda Ash, Marin product etc.

Monsoon Period

May 15 to September 15

No lighterage work is carried out during monsoon period.

Proposed additional facilities /investment plan

  • Construction work of GMB- Navy 200 m long jetty with amounting to Rs 55 crores is almost completed. The berthing place will be in operation soon.
  • There is plan of expansion of existing Coast Guard jetty by 100 m. The work will be taken up by GMB on agency basis.
  • There is plan to develop Naval base at Porbandar Port
