The concept of maritime university revolves around creating centre of specialized maritime expertise as well as "cradle of Innovation" and consequently creating suitable physical infrastructure to supports its operation.
Due to high growth in trade, Indian Maritime industry has grown many folds in the last few years. Indian maritime industry consists of several players including Government ports, private ports, ship-owners, charterers, brokers, forwarders, agents, ship chandlers, surveyors, manning agents, ship managers, ship operators, maritime lawyers, shipping consultants, and several other service providers.
For supporting the requirement of skilled manpower in diverse areas of ports and shipping, there is a need for creation of a maritime university in Gujarat.
